The Grand Traverse County Registrar of Deeds has added a tool to protect property owners from fraudsters looking to steal property titles.  You can sign up and get notified if someone tries to do a property transaction under your name.

If you have a mortgage your risk of theft is not as great because the fraudsters would have to involve the bank handling your loan.  If you own your property outright, you are more at-risk, especially if you are not there year round.  If you own raw land you should let your neighbors know that you are not selling it - and if they see a for sale sign, they should call you immediately.  Selling property someone else owns is another way fraudsters can get you.
